Science Enrichment for Primary School Students

Our science classes are fun and interactive. Because many students learn better by watching and participating, we show our students a lot of experiements and give them the opportunity to try it out for themselves. Certain concepts may seem quite abstract to 10-year olds but after clear explainations and visual aids, they will get it in no time.

Left: This experiement shows that oxygen consists of 20% of the air we breath.

Right: Iodine tincture was used to test for the presence of starch (carbohydrate) in banana. The tincture solution turned from orange to dark blue.

Iodine crystals are dark shiny solids and are not very soluble in water. However, they are very soluble in alcohol or liquid carbon tetratchloride. The crystals dissolved in carbon tetrachloride will turn the solvent purple.

Left: Magnets can be made using electricity and a coil of wire. The metal used must be iron, nickel or cobalt. The electromagnet will be a temporary magnet.

Remember the name of the girl Nicole - or rather NiCoFe. These are the 3 metals in which induced magnetism can be temporaryonly. However the alloys of these metals can produce permanent magnets.

Most permanent magnets are made out of alnico - as the name suggests, it is an alloy of aluminium, nickel and cobalt.

Right: To produce a magnet with 2 north poles at both ends of a steel ruler

We used two south poles of two similar parmanent magnets to stroke the ruler. The stroking motion starts from the centre of the ruler pulling to the ends - in opposite directions at the same time. Make 2 loops and close the loops back into the centre of the rule.
